SECM4 Merit Badge Training Program
The Merit Badge Program is a practical training resource designed for users who are new to cryo-EM. It covers key topics across the cryo-EM workflow, including sample preparation instruments and microscope operation. This program is adapted from the U.S. Cryo-EM Center Merit Badge system, which certifies users for independent use of specific procedures.
Note: Completion of the relevant Merit Badges is now required for local users who wish to access SECM4 services covered under the program.
How to earn a merit badge with SECM4?

Submit the SECM4 Sample preparation form

​​Select “Training” as the first service and the instrument (for example, “Vitrobot”) as the second service

​Review theoretical materials

​Take the knowledge quiz (a pass/fail test)

​​Upon passing the online quiz, please email the online quiz certificate to the SECM4 staff

During the step 2-3, you can ask for a demonstration session with the SECM4 staff.

​Have practical sessions

​​It's in-person training with center staff. We encourage you to group as a party of 2-3 people for the training and supervised practice

​Hands-on Practice

​​Supervised instrument use until you are ready for the independence test

​Take the Practical test
